Regular check-ins on your financial journey are as important as the initial plan. Here is what a productive financial review looks like.

Why the Review Matters

A financial plan without regular review is a plan that gradually decouples from reality. Life changes — income shifts, expenses change, circumstances evolve, goals update. A plan that was accurate and appropriate six months ago may be significantly out of alignment with current reality. Regular review brings the plan back into alignment with the actual situation, preserving its usefulness as a navigation guide.

Reviews also provide the feedback that drives improvement. Without periodic review, you cannot know whether your financial behaviors are producing the expected results — and if they are not, you cannot adjust before significant time has passed.

What to Review

A productive financial review covers five areas. Progress toward goals: are you on pace to achieve the targets you set? Account balances: are they where you expected them to be? Spending patterns: are the actual patterns aligned with your plan, and are there significant variances? Upcoming changes: what financial changes are coming in the next quarter that affect your plan? Goal relevance: are your current goals still the right goals, or have circumstances changed enough to warrant updating them?

What to Do With What You Find

The value of a review is determined by what you do with its findings. If actual spending consistently exceeds the plan in a category, either the behavior needs to change or the plan needs to be revised — but a persistent gap between plan and reality is a signal that requires a response. If goals are being consistently met, the review is an opportunity to update goals to reflect the current position. Good reviews produce action, even if that action is simply confirming that the current course is working.
